Well, i recall it being a leasure activity 5 years ago, so it must have happened recently.

I'm not really sure of the "sport" but i know it is harder than it looks and VERY tiring.

Question by x7: Can I get into Nordic skiing like I did with Alpine?
I used to be an avid alpine skier. Although I live in Indiana I used to take trips out west about 5 weeks a year. I had to quit because of three major injuries, last one a cerebral bleed when I hit a tree.

I want to get back into skiing but not downhill. Are there any great places out west that caters to "recreational" Nordic skiers?

How do I get started?

Answer by Annie
Sure, just like you did with alpine. Lots of alpine resorts also have cross-country skiing. You can go to their nordic center and rent skis, boots, and poles. They also offer lessons if you want. You could skate or classic. If you were a decent alpine skier you'll pick it up pretty quickly. It's great exercise, and fun, too! Just check online. Many places in the Mid-West have great cross-country skiing, which would be closer to you. I live in Salt Lake City and there is all kinds of good places to go around here. A great thing about nordic is how much cheaper it is than alpine. Lots of trails are free, others cost $ 5, the most expensive I've seen is $ 12.

Question by amandafin03: Does anyone know a great pre nordic skiing season workout plan?
I am in cross-country running right now so once it is over i will start training for nordic skiing, so the time between the 2 season I need some sort of workout plan. It would be greatly apprechiated! I am a sophomore and on the varsity ski team if that makes a difference. Thank you so much!

i'm on the ski team at my school too! anyway... our coach makes us run (so it's good that you're doing cross-country!), lunges, pushups, situps( not crunches) and pullups. you really want to target your thighs, so squats and lunges really help. good luck!

Most people, myself included, have been caught up in the hype of exercise equipment by Advertisements that make you believe that you need to have expensive equipment and/or machines, or go to a gym, in order to get a great workout. Well, here is the truth. You only need a pair of legs that can move and a couple of walking poles to get a total body workout.

We have all seen the ads for the Bowflex , the great abs sculpting contraption and many other types of home base gym sets with the top fit actors and models trying to lure us in to spend our hard earned cash. I must say I was one of them. After spending thousands on great big dust collector I just had to get rid of the thing. I am in no way bashing home gym equipment. These machines are high tech and built extremely well and the physics that go with them when used properly will benefit the user. Unfortunately over 90 percent of the people (like myself) who purchase home gyms only use them for a short time and the novelty wears off soon enough and in return is something often looked at when walked buy. Although we are a people who want to get in shape and feel better about ourselves we forget the simple thing that we do on a daily basis that can help maintain a healthy body and cardiovascular system, and that is walking. We have heard the term " walk a block a day" many times from TV ads and our phys E.D teachers to help keep us fit. With this in mind there is a better way to walk that can be the new way for a total body work out, and this the Nordic Walking Technique.

Nordic walking has it’s origins from off season ski training. An activity used for decades know as ski walking by cross country skiers who wanted to stay in shape and build stamina during the off season. It quickly became a way for people who had knee pain and back to pain to walk again reducing the amount of pain in their joints.

The first specially designed walking poles with optional rubber tips (for hard surfaces, such as concrete and pavement) were designed by Tom Rutlin. Rutlin's designs and enthusiasm helped to urbanize fitness pole walking.

In 1997, Finnish ski pole manufacturer Exel, working with Marko Kantaneva, introduced the trademarked Nordic Walker poles. "Nordic walking" became the accepted term for fitness walking with specially designed poles. Although fitness walking with poles has been relatively slow to be embraced in North America, the Nordic skiing savvy Northern Europeans quickly embraced this dry land hybrid of two of their favorite fitness activities, Nordic skiing and walking, and a little more than a decade after its introduction in Europe, an estimated 8-10 million people (mostly in Northern Europe) have taken up fitness walking with specially designed poles as a regular form of exercise. This is a great outdoor fitness activity that can help maintain a healthy life style and to meet new people. There are clubs that walk daily, weekly and monthly that have some great times together. No matter if you are the fitness elite who want to power walk with this technique or just stroll along with a friend enjoying each others company. The goal was to get more Americans off the couch and out walking. Once more Americans start walking they will have a deeper appreciation for our wonderful trail systems throughout the USA.

The American Nordic Walking System and www.skiwalking.com are headquartered in Glen Arbor, Michigan – home of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Free Nordic Ski Walking lessons were offered in Glen Arbor and free Nordic Ski Walking pole rentals were available for walking in town, on the beach, on the dunes or out on many of the beautiful trails within the adjacent Sleeping Bear Dunes Area.

Real Nordic Ski Walking poles are equipped with comfortable straps – kind of like a fingerless glove. The poles also include removable rubber tips for walking on pavement and other hard surfaces. For hiking off-road the rubber tips twist and pull off – exposing the durable carbide metal tips that are ideal for your favorite trail, the beach, snow and ice.

Over 6 million Europeans are walking with poles – in the cities, in the country and in the mountains. Nordic Ski Walking is the fastest growing fitness activity in Europe. Walking with poles burns more calories than regular walking – up to 40% more calories. The poles, your arms and the comfortable straps also help to reduce stress to the shins, knees, hips and back.

Originally Ski Walking was only embraced by serious skiers deprived of snow and as a means to get ready for the next ski season. Next came trekking poles – radically reducing the stress to the knees and backs of backpackers, but the twist-lock systems on the adjustable length poles often failed. Ski coaches in Finland saw the benefits of Ski Walking and introduced “Nordic Walking” to the masses. They developed durable one-piece poles with special fingerless glove type straps and added removable rubber tips to the poles so that Nordic Walking can be done on any type of surface.

One-piece poles custom fit to each individual’s height are safer, lighter and much more durable than cheap twist-locking adjustable length/telescoping/collapsible poles. The free rental poles provided by The American Nordic Walking System and www.skiwalking.com on National Trails Day will all be one-piece poles complete with real Nordic Walking Straps.

Nordic Walking poles are even helping individuals with balance issues get out walking again – including folks with MS, Parkinson’s, Neuropathy, Arthritis, Post Polio and other challenges. Folks with balance issues should especially avoid cheap tist-locking adjustable length/telescoping/collapsible poles. One-piece poles provide added balance and stability. When using the perfect length poles and correct technique the Nordic Walking Poles are almost always preferred over canes and walkers. The 4-wheel-drive type action also allows folks with knee, hip and back issues to take up walking again. Added comfort and stability means more individuals can get out and enjoy the trails.

We are looking forward to the  2009 National Trails Day!

He has also introduced Nordic Walking to thousands of Americans through Nordic Walking clinics, radio interviews, newspaper interviews and TV interviews. He has skied in 50K marathons and run 26.2 miles marathons. His skiers have been hill bounding and ski walking with poles for years in the summer when deprived of snow. Hosting Nordic Walking clinics is extremely enjoyable for Edwards and he especially enjoys hosting Nordic Walking clinics for MS and Parkinson’s support groups.
